Kennedy Cougars defeat Hempstead Mustangs

DUBUQUE (KWWL) - Two teams with considerable playoff hopes meet tonight in Dubuque. Both Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Dubuque Hempstead enter their MVC match up with identical 4-3 records. These two teams have a lot in common; the number four, three and the colors green and yellow.

Perhaps the biggest difference, Kennedy coming off a big win last week against Waterloo West, Hempstead with a loss against Xavier Saints.  Both teams looking for a key's homecoming night for Hempstead.  Coach Ehlers getting the team fired up on.  We pick it up in the first. Rob Murphy runs this one in.

It's 7-6 Cougars after the missed extra point. That would carry both teams into the half.  In the 3rd quarter Kennedy takes the lead as q-b Derek Thomas hands this off to Royce Bell.  It's 14-6 Kennedy.

Now we take it into the 4th; memorable drive for Josh Lenz reaching 1000 yards on the season.  He's taken down at the 26.  Two plays later Matt Ehlers with the hand off to Lenz, teammates giving him a pat on the helmet there.

Kennedy now 5-3 on the season, Mustangs 4-4.  But a good night for Lenz as he continues to lead the MVC rushers in yards.
