Gilchrist Hall Rededicated at UNI

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- Everyone's back home at the University of Northern Iowa's Gilchrist Hall after three years of renovations.

Gilchrist Hall is the home to number of key services, including the university's business operations, admissions, and even public safety. To have all of these services in one building once again is relief to faculty, staff, and students.

To end the rededication ceremony, students were put first, getting the chance to cut the ribbon that circled the inside of Gilchrist Hall. University officials took the opportunity to thank state representatives and others who helped with the renovations of the building.

Students say life on campus has become much easier now that everything is located in one building.

"I had the pleasure of experiencing how it feels to have everything centrally located before the fire occurred so we definitely miss being able to come here for everything while it was a difficult experience to have to go from building to building, but we understand the university's position," said Clarence Lobdell, III of UNI's Student Government.

Initial assessments of the fire damage indicated that Gilchrist would only be closed for a short amount of time. However, smoke and soot had spread throughout the duct work of the building.

It took more than two years to settle the more than 10 million dollar claim with the university's insurance company. The Iowa legislature appropriated two million dollars to pay for the university's deductible.
