Court reverses conviction in baby death

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - The Iowa Supreme Court has ordered a new trial for a woman convicted of drowning her infant son, whose body in a central Iowa lake.

Friday's ruling reverses the second-degree murder conviction of Heidi Anfinson and sends the case back to district court.

Anfinson has been serving a 50-year prison sentence in the 1998 death of her 15-day-old son, Jacob.

Anfinson's lawyer argued that the baby died accidentally in an infant bathtub and she panicked and hid his body in Saylorville Lake, north of Des Moines.

Anfinson claimed ineffective counsel because her lawyer didn't present evidence of her postpartum depression.

The Iowa Supreme Court supported her claim that her defense was prejudiced by her lawyer's failure to present expert testimony about her condition.
