Audit: $33,000 found in improper payroll in Durant

DURANT, Iowa (AP) - The state auditor's office has released a report that says it identified more than $33,000 in improper payroll disbursements in the eastern Iowa city of Durant.

Auditor David Vaudt says the special investigation was requested by city officials concerned with payroll issued by City Clerk Carla Graves, who was fired in May.

Of the $33,180 of improper disbursements during a period from July 1, 2000 through May 6, 2008, more than $29,200 was paid to Graves.

Vaudt says records weren't available to determine if there were other improper disbursements before July 2000.

He says Graves got regular pay increases each fiscal year, but the investigation also uncovered two additional increases not authorized by the City Council. He says her hourly rates were improperly inflated, resulting in 169 paychecks greater than the authorized amounts.
