Flood relief checks soon available in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - State officials say flood victims in Cedar Rapids who qualify for the state's $40 million Jump-start program will begin getting relief checks on Friday.

A spokeswoman with the Rebuild Iowa Office says Cedar Rapids, hit hard by widespread flooding in June, has been allocated $7.9 million for housing assistance and $12.3 million for business disaster relief under the program.

Businesses that reopen within six months are eligible for up to $50,000 in forgivable loans.

Also available under the program is up to $1,000 a month in mortgage assistance for up to one year for homeowners living in property submitted for possible government buyout programs.

There's even up to $50,000 in down payment assistance for Iowans whose homes were lost or damaged beyond repair, among other options.
