Former Illinois basketball player reaches deal

OTTUMWA, Iowa (AP) - Prosecutors says a former Illinois community college basketball player charged with sexually assaulting a student in Iowa has reached a plea deal.

Prosecutors say 19-year-old Charles Peden has agreed to plead guilty to assault with intent to commit serious injury. Peden was charged with third-degree sexual abuse.

A conviction on the original charge would have resulted in a 10-year prison sentence and life on parole. Under the plea agreement, Peden faces up two years in prison.

Peden played for Chicago's Wright College when he was accused of assaulting an Indian Hills Community College at an Ottumwa hotel during a basketball tournament last December.

Wapello County Attorney Allen Cook says DNA evidence led Peden's arrest but was not strong enough to get a conviction.

Cook says a written plea will likely be entered.
