Dole, McGovern share World Food Prize

Des Moines (KWWL) -- Bob Dole and George McGovern have a lot in common. Both are senators and both lost bids for president. Now the two share another title -- World Food Prize winners.

The two former presidential candidates spoke at a forum Wednesday night for the World Food Prize in Des Moines. The two are being honored for their work in bringing school lunch programs to poor areas throughout the world. But both said they are amazed at the level of hunger here in the U.S.

"I was bowled over. Here in America, we actually had people with not enough to eat or not the right food to eat," said Bob Dole.

"These were genuinely hungry people, we called them hobos, but they were ordinary Americans from every walk of life," said George McGovern.

Dole and McGovern will officially recieve their awards at a dinner Thursday night in Des Moines.
