We take cold medicine, eat healthy, but the best thing you can to to prevent a cold is simply washing your hands. Today is National Handwashing Day.
The CDC recommends you wash your hands for at least 15 seconds, the time it takes to sing the ABC's.
At Kittrell Elementary in Waterloo they teach kids about handwashing when they begin preschool.
"We teach them it's very important because otherwise we're spreading germs to our friends and that's how we get sick and then we don't get to come to school," says Holly Hlubek, a preschool teacher.
A survey of Iowans found that only 75 percent of females and 58 percent of males actually washed their hands after they used the restroom, though almost everyone claimed to.
