School officials face end of federal grants

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Iowa school officials say some programs targeted at low-income students may end as federal grants run out over the next few years.

Officials say millions in grants have paid for programs at schools with a high percentage of children whose family incomes qualify them for free or reduced-price lunches.

Federal spending on such programs grew 45% to $12.6 billion between 2001 and 2006, with most of the money going to urban districts.

But school officials say when the money runs out, they may have to cut other programs and use that money for low-income students' programs or find new sources of money, including funds that are spent on books or computers.
