Culver asks for economic help for States

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Gov. Chet Culver says the nation's economic collapse has drained $54 billion from the coffers of state governments, sending at least 29 states into a deficit this year.

Culver was in Washington Monday to deliver a message from the nation's governors to congressional leaders, telling them they need to take steps to help states deal with the economy.

He says the economic slowdown has had a pronounced affect in Iowa. State tax collections grew by 8 percent last year, but budget experts have predicted growth this year of just 1.2 percent, a different of $400 million.

Culver says he urged congressional leaders to approve new spending for infrastructure programs, which can create jobs quickly.
