Company must pay $10K for environmental violations

OKOBOJI, Iowa (AP) - The Iowa attorney general's office says a construction company has been ordered to pay $10,000 for solid waste and open burning violations near Lake Okoboji in Dickinson County.

The state filed a lawsuit last year against Bernard Cohrs and Cohrs Construction, Inc. It came after the Iowa Department of Natural Resources responded to a complaint that the company was burning solid waste at the Cohrs Gravel Pit.

Officials say the company illegally dumped and burned solid waste including commercial waste, household waste, an air conditioner, a recliner, a bike and other items.

A Dickinson County District Court judge entered the order on Monday requiring the company to pay $5,000 on each of the civil penalties.
