Salvation Army Holiday Programs Begin

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- The Salvation Army is teaming up with Hawkeye Area Community Action Program (HACAP), Toys for Tots, and the Cedar Rapids Jaycees once again this year to help those in need in Cedar Rapids.

Special holiday food boxes containing necessary supplies for a traditional Christmas meal will be distributed as part of the partnership between The Salvation Army and HACAP. Over 1,050 households in the area received these boxes in 2007.

The Salvation Army partnership with Toys for Tots and The Cedar Rapids Jaycees will provide "The Christmas Toy Shop." Over 12,000 toys, collected by staff and volunteers, were distributed to needy children throughout Linn County last year.

Registration is required for these programs and will be available from The Salvation Army from October 20 - November 25, Monday - Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Applications will also be available Wednesday evenings from 4 to 8 p.m. on November 5 and November 19.

All households with children from birth to 17 qualify for toy distribution. Households that meet income guidelines of 185% of the poverty level can apply for food boxes.

Applicants must bring the following to apply:  Iowa issued picture identification card, social security cards for each member of the family and proof of income.  Acceptable documents to verify income include:  Social Security statement or letter from the Social Security Administration stating income, 2007 income taxes, pay stubs from the last 30 days, food stamp EBT card, LIHEAP approval letter and/or WIC packet.

The Salvation Army is located at 1000 C Avenue NW and can be contacted at 319-364-9131 for more information.
