Corn sweetener byproduct enters Mississippi

KEOKUK (KWWL) -- More than 200,000 gallons of corn sweetener byproduct entered the Mississippi River Monday after a tank imploded.

Fluid from the imploded tank broke through a concrete retaining wall and knocked some nearby train cars off of the tracks at Roquette America, Inc., Refinery E facility in Keokuk.

The fluid flowed into a ditch that flowed into the Mississippi River. Gates nearby were shut and efforts are in place to remove as much of the product from the river as possible.

DNR Officials say there is no sign of fish being killed, and no long-term impact to the area.

The incident remains under investigation.
