Fort Dodge inmate faces escape charge

FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) - Authorities say an inmate who walked away from the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility could face up to five more years in prison if convicted of escape.

Corrections officials say 24-year-old Robert Dean Young was performing yard maintenance during work release duty on Wednesday afternoon when he fled to a residence in Fort Dodge.

He was found about five hours later and taken to the Webster County Jail. He was then returned to the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility.

If convicted of escape, officials say Young would be transported to a maximum security prison in Fort Madison. A preliminary hearing in his case was scheduled for Friday.

Young has been in prison since 2006 and is serving a 7-year sentence for second-degree theft, domestic assault and two counts of voluntary absence while being on work release. He was due to be released from prison in January.
