Rare horse adoption program helps environment

Waterloo (KWWL) -- A unique opportunity for eastern Iowans to adopt some wild animals this weekend.

The Bureau of Land Management held a wild horse and burro adoption this weekend at the National Cattle Congress in Waterloo.  The animals come from federally protected lands out west.   They are taken out of the wild to keep the population down and to protect the animal's habitat.   Wild horses are noted for their endurance and intelligence.

"Many times the animals that we think, and we all talk among ourselves to see which ones we think will go first. But sometimes we are surprised, because everyone is looking for something different," said Randy Anderson of the Bureau of Land Management.
