City High dominates Prairie, 42-10 to remain unbeaten

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- After three straight weeks of slow starts, Iowa City High gave Cedar Rapids Prairie an early wake-up call and never looked back on the way to an easy 42-10 win.

The Little Hawks got on the board in the 1st quarter thanks to an 11-yard touchdown run by Eric Washpun.  The extra point was blocked, keeping the score 6-0.  It was City High's first points in an opening quarter in 4 weeks.

They weren't finished.  Moments later, Washpun broke free for a 45-yard run inside the 10.  A.J. Derby capped off the drive with a 4-yard run and the 2-point conversion made it 14-0.

The Little Hawks kept it rolling in the second.  Derby connected with Noah Cmiel, who navigated his way 57 yards for the third score of the night.

On the ensuing Prairie possession, the Hawks moved the ball into City High territory, but Clay Embree scooped up a botched handoff and took it 64 yards the other way for a touchdown.  City High went to the locker room with a commanding 28-0 lead.

Prairie tried to get back in it at the start of the third.  Jeremiah Purdy took the opening kickoff of the second half 84 yards to the 10-yard line.  Three plays later, Alex Hanna hit Ross Siemering for the Hawks only touchdown of the night.

City High quickly answered with the help of another big play by Washpun.  On a screen pass from Derby, Washpun dodged a couple of would-be tacklers and headed 78 yards for his second touchdown of the night.

City High went on to win, 42-10, improving to 7-0 on the season.  Prairie, meanwhile, falls to 5-2.
