Former civil rights leader claims rights violated

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - A former director of the Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission has filed a complaint claiming his civil rights were violated when the board fired him.

Kenneth White claims he was denied his right to due process and was given no specific reason for his firing in July.

Commission chairwoman Miriam Amer says White was told why he was fired.

She says White failed to build a working relationship with his staff, the commission and the city council, and that he lied on his application, which asked if he'd ever been fired or suspended by an employer in the past 10 years.

The city's finance department was asked in May to look into more than $18,000 White spent on travel between July 2007 and May, and $5,000 he spent for new office space.
