Iowa AG says Shell stations agree to tobacco deal

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - The Iowa attorney general says Shell gasoline stations will take action to prevent sales of tobacco to children at 78 locations in the state.

Shell reached an agreement with Iowa and 45 other states to institute policies at more than 13,000 outlets across the nation. It's the 12th such agreement negotiated between the states and tobacco retailers that operate gas stations, convenience stores and other outlets.

Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller says Shell's actions will include training on tobacco laws, checks to ensure compliance and the use of cash registers that remind clerks to check tobacco customer's photo identification.

Companies previously agreeing to such moves include Wal-Mart, Walgreens and Conoco gas stations.
