UPDATE: Five hospitalized after Dubuque Police car crash

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- Five people are hospitalized after a Dubuque Police car slammed into a car carrying two adults and a child.

It happened Wednesday night around 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of Locust St. and Loras Blvd. Police say the driver of the car, 34 year old Laura Virtue of Dubuque, ran a red light at the intersection. A Dubuque Police cruiser with emergency lights and sirens engaged then crashed into Virtue's car in the intersection.

Police say Virtue was distracted because she was checking on passengers in the back seat at the time. Police have not said where the patrol car was headed.

All three people in Virtue's car, including a one year old, were hospitalized. Both passengers in the police car, Craig Salmonson and Cory Tuegel were also hospitalized.

Police are still investigating the crash and charges are pending.
