Church abuse payments to begin arriving next month

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - People who claim they were victims of priest sex abuse in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Davenport will soon be getting payments as part of a $37 million bankruptcy settlement.

Attorneys for the victims say letters went out Sept. 26 to more than 150 people specifying the amount each would receive in a preliminary payment.

Checks are expected to be issued in November.

The diocese filed for bankruptcy in October 2006, saying it did not have the money to settle the claims stemming from its decades-long clergy sexual abuse scandal. Davenport is 1 of 6 dioceses in the United States to file for bankruptcy due to sexual abuse scandals.

A federal bankruptcy judge approved a plan for the Davenport diocese in May.
