IOWA CITY (KWWL)-- Residents on a quiet Iowa City street couldn't believe their eyes  monday night.

A plane crashed just yards from the Iowa City airport on Edingale Drive.

The pilot was the only one on board and was taken to the hospital.

"I was sitting in my parents' bedroom with my daughter and I just heard a big loud crash and thought somebody had crashed into one of our vehicles," said Bry Bredlau, a witness.

"It almost sounds like a giant garbage dumpster and someone lifts it and drops it is what it sounded like," witness Jeff Librant said.

Shortly after 8:00, the pilot of a single engine cessna tried to land at the Iowa City Airport. But he clipped some trees and crashed just a few thousand feet from the runway.

"Me and a couple other neighbors ran up to the plane and he was just groaning so they just tried to hold him up and got some towels and a flashlight so we could see if he was doing okay," said Flight Instructor Jeremy Hassman.

"He wasn't in very good shape. I mean he was bloodied."

The man was flying alone. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

"I saw him take off actually [today] in the plane and he knows what he's doing. He's a good pilot."

Jeremy Hassman is a flight instructor at the airport. He says he has flown the same type of plane before.

"Since there was no fire he might have just ran out of gas, anything could have happened. I guess from the position of it it looks like he knew it was gonna go down and did something to prevent it," said Hassman.

In early June, another plane crashed just blocks away, killing a young girl.

Residents of this neighborhood are becoming concerned.

"There's been too many here," said Rod Lanaghan.

"Yeah, this is about the third or fourth one."

"A lot of our neighbors are talking about that it's been too low lately. All the planes are coming in too low."

Still, witnesses here are thankful it wasn't worse.

"Pretty safe landing in the middle of the street. That close to our house and this house and that house. Just to hit a tree is pretty good."
