Universities looking at new ways to alert students in emergencies

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- As today's college students become more tech-savvy, so do the schools they attend.   Many campuses are pioneering new ways to reach students in the event of emergencies.

University of Iowa network services director Mark Katsouros, says the university already has the hawk-alert system.   It notifies students of emergencies through phone and text messages as well as e-mails.   But sending messages through popular online social networks like Facebook and MySpace, he says, is the next logical step.

Katsouros has set up an experimental online Facebook group.   It only has a few dozen members for now, but he says the potential is there to reach thousands more.

Katsouros stressed that this program is still in its infancy.  If does become a reality, the university would not use it to peer into the private lives of students.
