Authorities find kin of Sheldon transient

SHELDON, Iowa (AP) - Authorities have solved part of the puzzle involving the death of a transient who left $263,000 in cash, mostly in $20 and $50 bills, in a box in a motel in Sheldon in northwest Iowa.

The money was left behind by John Grant, who died in March at the Sheldon Motel. Sioux County authorities found the money when they cleared the room. Grant's van and other possessions were valued at $13,000.

Since then, officials have been searching for Grant's relatives.

That led Sarah Snyder of Winter Garden, Fla. She's Grant's granddaughter - the only child of Grant's only child, daughter Pamela Snyder. She died five years ago in Colorado.

Sarah Snyder will inherit Grant's estate tax free. Authorities believe the money likely came from a legal settlement or a pension.
