Buddy Walk raises awareness of Down Syndrome

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- A beautiful, maybe chilly, Saturday morning for a walk, but hundreds came out to bring awareness to Down Syndrome.

The Hawkeye Area Down Syndrome Association held its third annual Buddy Walk Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids.  October is National Down Syndrome Awareness Month.

Nationwide, more than two million people have participated since the Buddy Walk was created in 1995.

The fundraiser inlcuded a one mile walk, a silent auction, plus games and kids activities.  More than 600 people came out.

"For me, it's like a big family reunion. We get together and we get to connect and have a great time as well," said Michelle McCarthy with the Hawkeye Down Syndrome Association.

The buddy walk has already raised more than $12,000 for the organization and hopes to raise $15,000 by the end of the month.
