Game of the Week: Union scores dramatic victory over Benton Community

La Porte City (KWWL) --  If the Union Knights proved anything on Friday, it's that talent is no replacement for heart.  Despite coming into their match-up with Benton Community with 5 starters on the bench due to injury, Union overcame the adversity to rally for a 14 - 10 victory in the final minutes.

Benton Community would take the early edge in the ballgame on a 3 yard run to the zone by quarterback Zach Twedt, but the Knights would strike back with a 9 yard touchdown run, as this game would be tied 14 apiece at the halftime break.

The Bobcats provided the only scoring of the third quarter with a 21 yard field goal from Wes Anderson, but the most dramatic moment came with Union in possession of the ball.  Knights' quarterback Garret Woodson was taken down in the backfield, and would need to be helped off the field with an ankle sprain.

Woodson would get some assistance from the Union defense, who would shut down the Bobcats for the remainder of the game and set the stage for a dramatic final drive.  Woodson, who returned in the 4th quarter faced a 4th and 15 with just over 2 minutes remaining.  He then zipped a pass to Shayne Reiter on a crossing route who would then take the ball 23 yards to the 15.  Three plays later Woodson found Jared Wauters all alone in the endzone on a 10 yard scoring strike with 1:48 remaining.

The Union defense finished it out forcing a turnover on downs as the Knights move to 6 - 0 on the season while clinching a berth in the postseason.  Benton Community falls to 3 - 3, and 1 - 3 in district play.
