DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- On October 1, 2008, Superintendent of Schools John Burgart informed the Dubuque Board of Education of his plan to retire at end of the current school year.

The Board of Education President Larry Loeppke stated: "We are fortunate to have had Mr. Burgart's competent and caring leadership for seven years and are grateful for his entire thirty years of service to our district. By giving advance notice of his intent to retire at the end of this school year, Mr. Burgart gives the Board sufficient time to engage in a thoughtful and inclusive search process which will result in the hiring of the individual best qualified to carry on the important work of our school district.

The process for seeking and considering candidates for the superintendent position will be discussed at next meeting of the Board's Human Resources Committee on Wednesday, October 8.
