Flood recovery to increase focus on job creation

DES MOINES (AP) -- State officials say disaster-recovery efforts will shift from housing to job creation after record summer flooding.

State economic director Mike Tramontina says the state should focus on ways to get flooded-out businesses up and running as part of its long-term recovery plan.

Members of the Rebuild Iowa Commission met Wednesday and say they are concerned that up to 9,000 jobs in Cedar Rapids could be affected by flooding.

The 15-member commission will recommend recovery strategies to Gov. Chet Culver and the Legislature by mid-November to consider in 2009.

Tramontina says he will discuss with state legislators whether more money needs to be devoted to the recovery effort.
