Iowa Poll: Obama widens lead on McCain

THE POLL: KCCI-TV Poll of 600 likely Iowa voters. (7 electoral votes)

THE NUMBERS: Barack Obama, 55 percent, John McCain, 39 percent.

OF INTEREST: Most recent polling has shown Obama with significant leads over McCain, but this margin is larger than that found in other polls. It is the first public poll of Iowa voters since Congress failed to pass a bailout plan for the nation's financial system. The poll also showed that McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate made 18 percent more likely to vote for the Republican, and 23 percent less likely. About 59 percent said it made no difference.

DETAILS: Conducted by Research 2000 on Sept. 29-30 through telephone interviews with 600 likely voters. Sampling error plus or minus 4 percentage points.
