Culver: Disaster aid 'bridge' will tide state over

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Gov. Chet Culver says $300 million in federal and state disaster aid should tide the state over until the Legislature returns to session in January.

Culver says the aid and disaster assistance already sent to Iowa makes it unlikely he will call a special session of the Legislature, although he reserved the right to change his mind.

The latest aid is part of a $23 billion federal disaster relief package that Culver expects will bring about $150 million to Iowa.

Culver and lawmakers initially had said they expected a special session, but the governor later decided enough money was available to avoid calling legislators back to Des Moines.
