WATERLOO (KWWL) - A free... yes, free.... dental clinic is coming to Waterloo Friday, October 3 and Saturday, October 4.
This is the first Iowa Mission of Mercy, or I-MOM, put on by the Iowa Dental Association. Dentist Marty Averill is just one of almost a thousand volunteers.
The clinic is important because dental care and health care go together like brushing and flossing.
"There are innumerable studies coming out that link oral care to general health in terms of periodontal disease and heart disease, so it's an integral part of your total health," said Dr. Marty Averill with Waterloo Dental Associates.
To give people the dental care they need, but maybe can't afford, a free clinic is available Friday and Saturday at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center in Waterloo.
"All you have to do is show up. I participated in Nebraska Mission of Mercy last year and there were people showing up at four in the morning," said Averill.
Dr. Averill recommends arriving early. The clinic is a first come, first serve basis. Dental volunteers can address all types of needs, including cleaning, teeth pulling and other major surgeries.
"We're going to deal with what they want to have completed. If they complete that procedure and want to have something else done, they can get back in line and through the line again," said Averill.
The goal is to bring smiles to at least one thousand mouths. The cost of the clinic is paid for through donations from businesses, the public and dental suppliers.
The clinic is from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, October 3 and Saturday, October 4. The Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center is located on the corner of W. Fourth and Commercials Streets in Waterloo.
