City High holds off Hempstead, 34-21

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- City High overcame a slow start on offense to knock off Dubuque Hempstead, 34-21.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Little Hawks executed a fake punt to perfection, leading to their first score.  On 4th and 1, A.J. Derby lined up in punt formation, but threw a shovel pass to Nick Reuter.  Reuter took the pass 59 yards down to the Hempstead 7.  City High punched it in two plays later to take a 7-0 lead.

After forcing a Hempstead punt, City High took over at its own 20 with less than a minute to go in the 1st half.  Derby capped off the last-minute TD drive with a 22-yard run to make it 14-0 Little Hawks at halftime.

City High added another score less than 2 minutes into the 3rd to make it 21-0.  Hempstead never got closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

With the win, City High improves to 5-0, while Hempstead falls to 3-2.
