Iowa City West faces off against Dubuque Hempstead

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- The first football game of the season, means new beginnings and both teams with high hopes. Iowa City West has a new leader and Hempstead didn't know what to expect.

The Mustangs were just one game shy of the playoffs last year. They hit the grid-iron with a chip on their shoulder, ready to take on the Trojans.

Early in the first quarter, Iowa City West lights up the board, Quarterback Justin Meyerdirk dodges not one, but three tackles. Taking the Trojans to the ten.

On the very next play, Number 31, Jamall Thompson takes sneaks through the pile. It's 7-0 Hempstead.

Hempsteads answers back with future Cyclone Joshua Lenz. He had a 40 yard run for a touchdown. The game is now tied at 7.

The Mustangs continued the lead into the second. Lenz with another touchdown run in the 3rd, he was on fire.

Hempstead wins it, 31 to 17. Starting out the season with a win at home.
