Athlete of the Week: Faith Burt

Our athlete of the week has always found strength and wisdom in the face of adversity. This is the story of girls track superstar Faith Burt. The name Faith Burt has been synonymous with winning since the first day she stepped on a track as a freshman three years ago.

Standing just a little over five feet, this Cedar Falls sprinter has come up biggest on grandest stages.

"It feels great to get publicity, in my freshman year I wanted to be known throughout the state of Iowa," 10-time State Champion Faith Burt said.

Mission accomplished, Faith claimed the title of the fastest sprinter in the state, winning the 100 meter titles at the drake relays as both a freshman and a sophomore, in her first two years Burt was the most dominant athlete in girls track collecting seven state titles. Faith Burt was on a fast track to immortality, until she hit a speed bump her junior year in 2007.

"It wasn't the year I wanted but it was the year I needed because sometimes you are going to get beat," Burt said.

Faith suffered her first upset loss at Drake, finishing third in the 100 meters, she would lose again in the 200 meters at state. Although burt won three more state titles last year, the two races she lost has made her stronger.

"I did a lot of learning and maturing, lost form needed to work harder,

Cedar Falls Head Track Coach Troy Becker says humility and determination are just two of the special ingredients of this remarkable athlete.

"She's every bit as good a person as she is an athlete," Coach Troy Becker said.

Faith's family has been a very important part of her success her mother Rose and her sister Shatrece are her biggest advocates, but Burt says she runs for everyone.
"I'm going to give them the show that they want," Burt said.
