Recycling on Earth Day

WATERLOO (KWWL) --  Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970.  Millions of Americans rallied, marched and learned about their environment, planting trees and the seeds for an ecological movement.

People around the world are now thinking of their carbon footprints, cleaning up trash and recycling.  We rode along with Waterloo's waste management services while they picked up recyclables.   The city started curbside recycling in 2003.

About 35 percent of the city's trash customers have also signed up for recycling and yard waste pickup.  The city says that's higher than many other places that offer recycling services.

And they believe its because the city offers several options.  Waste management officials say people don't realize recylcing will eventually save them money. Now for those of you who might live in an apartment, or maybe don't want to wait two weeks to have your recyclables picked up.   The city also has eleven locations around town where you can drop off items anytime.
