Construction continues at IA 58 & Viking Rd

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

A $32 million project continues at one of Iowa's most dangerous intersections.

After some rain delays this summer, the Iowa DOT said they're still making good progress on the interchange project at Iowa 58 & Viking Road in Cedar Falls.

A new traffic pattern started on July 22, according to Pete Hjelmstad, a field services coordinator for the DOT.

Hjelmstad said head-to-head traffic on Viking Road moved from the westbound lanes to the newly reconstructed eastbound lanes. This allows the westbound lanes to be reconstructed. Work continues on the northbound on and off ramps on Iowa 58.

The Iowa D-O-T reminded drivers to pay attention while they're going through this busy area.

"You know, other people in the car, messing with the radio, your GPS system, whatever. Please leave that stuff alone when you're going through the work zone because driving always deserves your full attention," Hjelmstad said. "It's even more important when you're driving through a work zone that has different driving conditions."

Hjelmstad said they are on schedule right now. He said they plan on having four-lane traffic on Highway 58 by Thanksgiving.

The entire 2-year project is slated to finish in 2019.

The DOT reminds drivers to take different routes during busy traffic times. They also said they appreciate everyone's patience.

"We'll be very happy when this project is done," Hjelmstad said. "Like every project, we really, really appreciate their understanding because it is something that everyone has to deal with, especially the people who have businesses in there, people who have to travel through there for work, or travel through there to get home."
