Red Cross asking for urgently needed blood donations

Posted: Updated:

The American Red Cross is asking for those able to donate blood and platelets, as the critical need remains to end the emergency summer blood shortage that began in July.

Many regular donors have delayed giving during the summer months, due to vacations and school preparations.  Donations are urgently needed, especially type O.  According to the Red Cross, type O is "routinely in short supply and in high demand by hospitals – both because it (O positive) is the most common blood type and because type O negative blood, in particular, is the universal blood type needed for emergency transfusions.

Those who come to donate blood or platelets July 30 through August 30 will receive a $5 gift card via email.

Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
