Special election to fill Iowa City city council vacancy

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

A special election will be held on October 8th, to fill one at large city council seat. This comes after the Iowa City City Council members voted 6-0 in a meeting on Friday, August 3rd to opt for the special election. 

Kingsley Botchway, who previously held the at large seat, submitted his resignation with city council on Tuesday, July 17th. Botchway's term was originally set to end December 31, 2021. 

Anyone interested in running for the at large city council seat must file with the Johnson County Auditor's Office by Friday, August 10th. Potential candidate's are required to have 128 signatures by 5 p.m. on August 10th. 

According to the Johnson County Auditor's website, if three or more candidates apply, there will be a primary held September 4th.
