UPDATE: In a news conference on Friday afternoon Chief of Police Tom McAndrew of Ottumwa Police Department said they received a call of shots fired on S. Webster Street and that someone had been shot. On the way to the area, officers received calls that there were at least three or four people running down the creek by the school. Offers then put Liberty School on lockdown.

Police found three people behind the school and exchanged gun fire with at least one of them who had a rifle. They shot at each other for a few minutes before police shot the person with the rifle. After a perimeter was set up, officers located one person in a ditch, who is now in custody. Another person was shot and killed, one was taken into custody and there is still one at large.

Officers are considering this person to be armed and dangerous, and are warning the public to stay inside.

All children in the school are safe, however Chief McAndrew says the public is in danger.
