The Colts Drum and Bugle Corps prepares for Music on the March

Posted: Updated:

The best of the best -- drummers and buglers from all over the country are coming back to eastern Iowa. The tradition still holding strong here in Dubuque as the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps is celebrating 55 years this Friday the 13th, at "Music on the March."

We spoke with some of those Corps members Wednesday as they are traveling through Des Moines back to Dubuque to defend their home turf.

Justin Nowack, a trumpet lead for the Colts who is from Dubuque, says this is what it's all about. "Getting to instill pride in the place that we come from, like we go around touring across the country it's nice to come home and show people this is what we are doing. We are broadcasting and advertising Iowa and Dubuque to the world."

This year the Colts are celebrating 55 years, which makes their performance at Music on the March even more special. Patty Averkamp, who is in the color guard, says she's not letting that get to her. "I try not to think about the competition and just focus on my own show," said Averkamp.

Mason Ferrantelli, an Arizona native who's on the cymbals, agrees with Averkamp and says this is what they have been preparing for. "We've just been improving the show and we're coming in really confident to this show, we are ready to thrown down in our hometown and home state," said Ferrantelli.

Joshua Britchart is a snare drummer from England on the Corps. He hopes to make all the alumni proud.  "You are part of something that's been going on a lot longer than you have, and you are reminded of all of the people who have done this before you and they appreciate it that much more," said Britchart.

The Colt's will be rehearsing all day Thursday at Dalzell Field and Friday at Hempstead High School. Anyone is welcome to come get a sneak peak before Friday.

If you would like to see them in competition action, tickets are available here and will also be available for purchase at the door.

Music on the March is hosted at Dalzell Field: 1800 Clarke Drive Dubuque, IA 52001 and kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday.
