Allegiant Spokesperson: All 157 passengers safe after emergency landing

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

An Allegiant Airlines flight from the Eastern Iowa Airport to Mesa/Phoenix had to turn around and land in Cedar Rapids after only being in the air for 17 minutes Wednesday afternoon.

According to Allegiant's Media Relations spokesperson Kyrsta Levy, Flight 101 from Cedar Rapids to Phoenix returned to Cedar Rapids after a mechanical issue arose after takeoff. The crew declared an emergency out of caution and the plane landed normally. Levys says that the aircraft was met by local fire and rescue officials and they found nothing unusual. The passengers deplaned normally through the jet bridge.

There were 157 passengers on board. Allegiant is currently sending another airplane to Cedar Rapids to get the passengers to Phoenix today.

"We're getting ready to go to the runway and take off and there was like a vapor coming out of the air vents along the sides of the plane inside. And we I mean, got up in the air and it smelt, you know there was definitely an odor to it," Connor Dorsey told us, a passenger on the plane.
