DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Longtime Iowa sportscaster Larry Cotlar has died after being swept away by flash flood waters in Des Moines.

The 66-year-old had been the voice of Drake University sports since 2005.

Drake University President Marty Martin released a statement this afternoon saying, "Our hearts go out to Larry's family and friends, especially the thousands of Bulldog fans in Des Moines who have come to know Larry as the voice of their hometown team."

Cotlar was Iowa sportscaster of the year in 2007.

Former Iowa quarterback Brad Banks reacted to the news on Twitter writing, "Sorry to hear the news about my man Larry Cotler. True standup guy all across the board. Thanks for all you did for me as a friend off the field as well. You will be missed. My condolences to your family."
