Alliant Energy 'cycles' to reduce cooling costs

CEDAR RAPIDS (AP) -

A new voluntary customer program by Alliant Energy reduces energy prices caused by central air units by turning down the air-conditioner.

Air-conditioners produced by Alliant Energy will be cycled in 15-minute intervals from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday. Participants use high demanded energy on the hot days, this increases their energy bill. According to Alliant Energy, the program syncs air conditioners across the state to reduce the number running at any one time.

Customers who enroll in the program get credit on their bill from June through September. If the weather does not get warm enough to cycle the air conditioning unit there will still be company credit on their bill but at a reduced rate.
