CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A Waterloo man convicted of sending threatening tweets to U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst will spend six years in federal prison.

The prison term was handed down Wednesday in Cedar Rapids District Court after 34-year-old Joseph Dierks was found guilty on three counts of sending threatening communications in November 2017.

Evidence from the case showed Dierks sent a series of tweets to Iowa's junior senator last August, including a message in which he suggested he would shoot Sen. Ernst.

A federal release outlining Dierks' sentence also notes a previous conviction against him for harassing a Waterloo police officer and carrying weapons.
