92-year-old Cedar Falls gardener proves "anyone can grow"

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

An eastern Iowa community garden is now open for anyone to use. The Cedar Falls Community Garden has a saying: "Come grow with us."

If you visit the garden in the morning, there's a chance you'll run into 92-year-old Wayne Hanson.

He helps take care of the Nazareth Lutheran Church gardens. The food from these gardens gets donated to those in need.

"Just gives me something to do, but a lot of poor people need it. That's all. It's all given away. Nothing get's sold. That's for sure," Hanson says.

He has a nickname for himself. "I play Santa Clause out here with my garden hoe hoe hoe."

He says he hopes others realize that anyone can garden.

"Anyone can garden if they want to work a little bit, that's for sure," he says.

The Cedar Falls Community Garden says they always love new gardeners. Their "must be planted by" date is June 15th. They say the City Parks Department helps make this garden possible.

People can come out and garden; anyone from beginners to master gardeners.
