Mosquito Surveillance Program underway in Johnson County

Posted: Updated:

Johnson County Public Health will be collecting mosquitoes this summer to look for mosquito-borne diseases across the county.

With the help of the Iowa Department of Public Health, Iowa State University and the State Hygienic Laboratory, Johnson County Public Health will utilize traps to collect mosquitoes for further study.

The traps are located across Johnson County in areas of likely mosquito habitat, and each week the mosquitoes will be collected by Johnson County Environmental Health staff and sent to Iowa State University for species identification. Afterward, samples will be sent to the State Hygienic Laboratory to test for the presence of Zika Virus and West Nile Virus.
