Waterloo police hope to reduce crime with new "SAFE" program

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The Waterloo Police Department and the U.S Attorney's Office are joining together to form a new group.

It's called "Safe Areas For Everyone" (SAFE). Their mission is to stop violent crimes in the city.

Earlier this year, Waterloo Police Chief Dan Trelka said Waterloo's violent crime rate was down 32% compared to 10 years ago. But homicides have since slightly gone back up.

"We've had great success in the city of Waterloo with the Waterloo Police Department and with a federal task force involving both ATF and the FBI enforcing federal gun laws to try to make a difference in the crime rate," says U.S. Attorney Peter E. Deegan, Jr.

There hasn't been a starting date announced for the group. We'll update you when the information is available.
