Waverly-Shell Rock rolls to state soccer with 4-1 win over Union

WAVERLY (KWWL) -

The Knights struck first, but the Go-Hawks struck often. Second ranked Waverly-Shell Rock erased an early 1-0 deficit, scoring four unanswered goals to defeat seventh ranked Union 4-1.

Union's Ally Carty scored on a break-away goal in the first minute to give the Knights the early lead. Waverly-Shell Rock struck back just four minutes later when Kennedy Rieken centered a pass to senior Morgan Kurtt who blasted it in to the back of the net.

"Getting that first goal in the bag, I think that really boosted our confidence, said Kurtt, "We just needed that first one in and we were on a roll."

Ninety-nine seconds later, Kurtt drove home her second goal of the match for a 2-1 Union advantage. Rieken added another score late in the first as the Go-Hawks led 3-1 at the half. She added another insurance goal in the second half to help the Go-Hawks reach the tournament.

"They had a lucky goal in the first minute, but that didn't stop us," said Rieken, "We came back and scored two in I don't know how long it was. It was pretty quickly. We came back and recovered."

Waverly-Shell Rock faces West Burlington-Notre Dame in the first round of the class 2A state tournament on Thursday.
