Gas prices up going into Memorial Day weekend

Posted: Updated:

Gas prices are up all over the country, but that's not stopping tens of thousands of American's from traveling this weekend.

An expert warns, the roadways will be crowded this weekend.

"36 million are projected to be driving to their destination this year," said Tamra Johnson, AAA.

But the cost of traveling to that destination this summer will be higher.

"Right now there are reports out that gas prices are expected to go up 14% for summer travel," said Jeanenne Tornatore, Travel Expert.

AAA reports the average price for a gallon of regular, unleaded fuel is approaching $3.59 higher than a year ago.

But the price of gas hasn't forced travelers to hit the breaks on their getaway.

"All though it is higher than it should be, it's not really going to effect us much," said David Wakeman, Holiday Traveler.

Experts say consumers have more money to spend and more confidence thanks to a strong economy.

"And as consumers are more confident, they're spending more money and they're actually investing more in travel with family," said Johnson.

An investment in a good time.
