Following 2 simple rules while boating can save countless lives

Posted: Updated:

This week, May 19 through 25, is National Safe Boating Week.  As the weather has turned nice and many look to the waters for leisure and activities, this week is a time to reflect on the hazards that are involved with boating.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary says alcohol continues to be the main contributing factor in boating accidents.

Additionally, people aren't wearing life jackets, and it's proving to be deadly.  Of the 701 deaths that occurred in recreational boating accidents in 2016, 509 individuals died from drowning.  404 of those people were not wearing a life jacket.

Following just these two rules can end up saving your life and the lives of those around you on the water:

1. Don't drink and take the helm.

2. Ensure everyone, children and adults, are wearing a life jacket.
