Bike Night offers a reminder to share the road

Rolling into downtown Waterloo every Thursday for Bike Night at the Screaming Eagle, bikers gather for more than just cold drinks and good music.

"Just meeting friends and getting together," said Cindy Pollow, who has been attending bike night for years.

"Camaraderie," said Jim Kuykendall, who just started going to bike night this year.

Although it centers around motorcycles, "this event is for everybody, it's just a party in the street. Kids are welcome. Families are welcome," said Screaming Eagle owner, Ivan Wieland.

While the main goal of bike night is to enjoy the summer nights with friends, Wieland says it also serves as a place to break down biker stigmas and create awareness, including safety on the roads.

"All we ask is that you look three times; look left once, look right once, look left again. A bike is so small in your left view, you may not be able to see them," said Wieland.

With crashes happening all too often, safety is a common topic among bikers.

"You do hear people talking about the safety side of riding, the defensive part. You have always got to be defensive when you are on the road on a motorcycle," said Kuykendall.

Unfortunately, this week in Linn County, three motorcyclists were seriously injured in three separate accidents. All three accidents happened within a 12-hour period.
